Wing Commander John Clifford OBE MSc MBCS CEng CITP RAF (Retd)
John Clifford became an RAF Electronic Warfare Instructor in the late 1970’s as a Navigator on the V-Force. He graduated from the GD Aerosystems course in 1981 after which he was the Senior Avionics Specialist at 6FTS. On promotion he was appointed deputy Squadron Commander on Radar Research Squadron at RAE Bedford, followed by a tour running the Tornado flight trials program in Munich. For over 30 years, he has been a Charted Engineer and a Chartered IT Professional with a Master’s degree with Distinction in computing aided engineering. After graduating from the Joint Service Defence College in 1992 he specialised in EW, initially with the Joint Warfare Staff at Royal Marines Poole, where he was promoted to Wing Commander. For 12 years, until the end of 2008 when he retired from the RAF, he was the lead desk officer in joint and air EW in five successive operational tours in UK MOD. In this role, he supported UK operations from the Defence Crisis Management Organisation and helped stand up the UK’s first Information Warfare / Operations directorate, which included IW/IO, psyops, cyber and EW. He was also responsible for EW operations, directives, policy, doctrine and concepts, and was heavily involved in urgent operational requirements for conflicts in the Balkans, Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere. During this time, he led much of the NATO work on EW policy, doctrine and concepts. He is now the Director of an international defence consultancy specialising in EW, the Electromagnetic Domain and Cyber EM Activities, which has worked for the UK MoD, US Army, NATO, and the AOC as Director Global Conferences. He wrote the UK’s new joint EW Policy as a consultant in 2013 and worked on the UK EME Review simultaneously. He is currently the President of the UK Chapter of the AOC. He was recognised for his work by Her Majesty the Queen in the 2006 New Year Honours List.
