Challenges in Integration and Testing of ASE

A state of the art self-protection system has been integrated as a part of a Cougar AS532UL upgrade program. The multi-sensor warning system detects ultra violet (UV) emissions from approaching missiles, radar threats and laser beams. The countermeasure system consists of six chaff and flare dispensers. The challenge is to integrate 30 system components into a helicopter and to implement a variety of interfaces to other avionic components (e.g. navigation data, multifunctional displays etc.). Therefore the simulation and testing is a sophisticated and integral part of the quality assurance. Testing is a key component of a product development, not just concerning functionality itself, but also from a certification point of view.

For that reason, a test environment is necessary in order to be able to implement new developments, enhancements and integrations in a customer-satisfying manner. The requirements for such a system should be defined in a holistic way: It should support a variety of test strategies and test cases with a high realism whilst complying with the testability requirements for the system under test. Reproducibility, reliability, data security and other requirements are recognized to be important as well. RUAG has developed a test environment for this purpose and supports the improvement and development of sophisticated airborne self-protection systems.

It is a major advantage for the engineering department to perform flight test analyses, investigations of detected failures, simulations of use cases and to support further developments. With the presented test environment, no operational system is required for the mentioned activities, which facilitates investigations as well as further development. The test environment also includes an updated missile simulator (missim), which is also used for flight line testing of the sensors of the self-protection system.

The advantages, as well as challenges and limitations of the EW test system are presented. An insight in some possible extensions and implementation options are discussed as well.
